Weatheradio Replacement: What to Use Now
Environment Canada's Weatheradio network was permanently shut down on March 16, 2026, along with the Hello Weather telephone service. If you relied on Weatheradio for weather updates, Canada WeatherLine is the private alternative that keeps you connected to Environment Canada forecasts by phone.
Weatheradio is no longer broadcasting
As of March 16, 2026, all Weatheradio transmitters across Canada have been decommissioned. Weatheradio receivers will no longer pick up weather broadcasts.
What Was Weatheradio?
Weatheradio was Environment Canada's network of VHF radio transmitters that broadcast continuous weather information across Canada. Launched in the 1980s, it grew to include over 230 transmitters covering major population centres and many rural areas.
Canadians used dedicated Weatheradio receivers, small radios tuned to the Weatheradio frequencies (162.400 to 162.550 MHz), to hear forecasts, warnings, and current conditions 24 hours a day. Many receivers included an alert feature that would sound an alarm when severe weather warnings were issued.
Weatheradio was especially valued by farmers, mariners, pilots, and rural communities where internet access was limited or unreliable. For many, it was the most dependable way to stay informed about dangerous weather conditions.
Why Was Weatheradio Shut Down?
Environment Canada announced the discontinuation of Weatheradio as part of a broader modernization effort. The government cited declining listenership and the increasing availability of weather information through internet and mobile platforms.
On March 16, 2026, all Weatheradio transmitters were permanently decommissioned, and the companion Hello Weather telephone service (1-833-794-3556) was also discontinued on the same date.
The shutdown left many Canadians, particularly in rural and remote areas, without a simple, technology-free way to access weather forecasts. For these communities, internet-based alternatives aren't always practical due to connectivity limitations.
