A Long Tradition of Phone Weather in Canada

Canada has a long history of telephone-based weather services. Environment and Climate Change Canada operated automated telephone forecast services, including Hello Weather, alongside the Weatheradio network as alternatives to web and app channels.

When Environment Canada discontinued both Hello Weather and Weatheradio on March 16, 2026, many Canadians were left without a simple, reliable way to get their weather forecast by phone. Canada WeatherLine was created to fill that gap.

Canada WeatherLine builds on the same concept (call a number, hear your forecast) but with modern technology. Voice recognition lets you say your location instead of looking up codes in a directory, and forecasts include more detail, including hour-by-hour conditions and 7-day outlooks.

Who Uses Weather by Phone?

  • Farmers and ranchers who need reliable forecasts for planting, harvesting, and livestock management
  • Rural and remote communities where internet service is unreliable or unavailable
  • Seniors who prefer the simplicity of a phone call over navigating weather apps
  • Outdoor workers in construction, forestry, and marine industries
  • Hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts heading into areas without cell data
  • Anyone during power outages or emergencies when internet is down but phone lines still work
